Just watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I might do a write-up, but it's fairly cut and dry--this was a good movie, and Jesse James is assassinated by Robert Ford. The journey is the destination in this one, with lots of character development.
I might skip a review on that one though, in favor of another one we watched recently: Big Bad Mama. Featuring Angie Dickinson, Tom Skerrit, and William Shatner--who has a sex scene with Angie Dickinson.
There's not enough space on the internet to set that last fact in a large enough font.
It's a seventies sex/violence/car chase caper movie set during the Depression. But there's so much more that needs to be said.
Anywho, hope your week's going well--I'm just about blowed out and it's only Wednesday.Feeling: exhausted

You know what really bothers me about West Virginia?
Hillary is making such a big deal that she can pull in these rural voters. But who are these rural voters?
These West Virgina rural voters are poor, uneducated, and racists. I don't care if no Democrat has won the White House without West Virginia since 1916. I wouldn't want to owe a win to such a part of the country. These kinds of voters need to seriously be kicked to the curb. They are the kind of voters that are directly to blame for Bush. They are his base of support. And Democrats have no business courting them.
Anyway. Despite all the noise Clinton is making? It's truely over. The only votes that matter now are the Superdelegates. They will decide this. Even if Michigan and Florida are seated.Feeling: blah

YOU ARE THE NEW DAY Airwaves (sung a capella)
I will love you more than me, and more than yesterday; If you can but prove to me, you are the new day.
Send the sun in time for dawn, Let the birds all hail the morning. Love of life will urge me say: you are the new day.
When I lay me down at night, knowing we must pay; Thoughts occur that this night might, stay yesterday.
Thoughts that we as humans small, could slow worlds and end it all; Lie around me where they fall, before the new day.
One more day when time is running out for everyone; Like a breath I knew would come I reach for the new day.
Hope is my philosophy, Just needs days in which to be: Love of life means hope for me, borne on a new day.
You are the new day. Feeling: thoughtful

Oh, so *this* is what "better" feels like
|

|
For the last couple weeks, I've been telling people that I was feeling better. It was true, but "better" is a relative term. Certainly, I felt better than when I was feverish and couldn't stay awake more than two hours at a time.
However, I did not realize just how much more improvement I had yet to go until my doctor got the sinus x-ray results and called to say that I still had a bit of an infection and he'd called in a prescription for a stronger antibiotic for me. I'm 4 days into the new antibiotic.
In those four days (actually, in the last three days, since the first day it hadn't really kicked in yet), the difference in how I feel has been amazing. I still left work early on Monday, but it was to go shopping and then to a doctor's appointment regarding the thyroid cysts (end result: nothing to worry about, couldn't have caused the symptoms that caused us to run the initial thyroid tests. I'm to have another ultrasound in 6 months to see if anything has changed; if not, no worries. If there are changes, then we re-evaluate.)
There was some gardening on the not-crappy days, some shopping, some car maintenance, lots of running errands, some laundry, and today I cooked dinners for the week. I think I've done more since Saturday than I have in a month.
The downside is that it's the same antibiotic that caused me to not sleep in February, and I've had a few nights of tossing and turning a bit. There's a good chance that by the time I've finished the full dose, I'll be cranky and bitchy from lack of sleep. However, last time that went away as soon as I stopped taking the antibiotic and caught up on sleep, so it should only be a little bit of irritation before it's all good again.Feeling: chipper

You know those suggestions offered by online shops when you make a purchase? The people who bought the item you just bought also liked such-and-such suggestions? It occurred to me last night that while those little ads are a good way to find more of what you like, they don't help at all when you want to find new interests.
I propose a try-something-different approach to accompany the current system.
Right now amazon is looking at my buying history and recommending Doctor Who, Star Trek TOS, Star Trek TNG, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager, Stargate, some dinosaur documentaries ( greyweirdo 's fault), and He-Man ( droewyn 's fault). Yes, these items are all within my sphere of things I'm likely to buy. But what about the things I'd never think of?

Topic Tuesday: Fab and Me
|
May. 13th, 2008 @ 03:52 pm
|
|---|
|

Yes, that's me, age mid-twentysomething, and that's Fabio. Did I forget to mention our torrid liason? The yearning? The passion? The colossal wave of surging desire? Gee, how did that slip my mind?
You see, back in the day, I was quite the hottie boombalottie. I had that great early nineties Aqua Net hair with bangs that stood up a good seven inches, a size 8 ass, and the hair was blondie-blonde and touched the top of that size 8 ass. I don't talk much about those days, because so much of it is a blur. I was working as a retail store manager, and I had...an addiction. Oh yes, I had a serious addiction problem. It shames me beyond all measure to reveal it to you now, but I pledged honesty in this blog, so you get to know the whole sordid scenario.
I was addicted to trashy historical romance novels. Occasionally, I'd find a trashy paranormal or futuristic romance novel, but back then they were few and far between. I owned over 500 of the things, categorized by author, dog-eared and reread a multitude of times. No lame-ass harlequin bullshit, either. These were hardcore: Nan Ryan, Julie Garwood, Linda Lael Miller, Kathleen Nance, Dara Joy, Johanna Lindsay and a plethora of others. I even have a personal note from Ms. Lindsay, after I wrote her begging her to write the next novel in a certain series she'd started. Oh yes, my bookshelf was full of heaving bosoms, turgid nipples and throbbing manhood. I reveled in it.
My bookcase being what it was, you must know that Fabio and I became well aquainted long before we ever met. It was because of Fabio that I learned to read one-handed, if you get my drift. So when he "wrote" (read: posed for the cover while someone else wrote) a romance novel, I bought the thing immediately. Oh, it was dreck. Complete and utter dreck. I would have cheerfully tossed it in the trash if it weren't for the fold out photo of Fabio inside, reclining in a loincloth on a hot rock with an "I'm going to bend you to my will" look in his eyes. Oh. Oh my.
Not long after the book release, Fabio went on a book signing tour, and wonder of wonders, he was coming to a mall not 20 minutes from my house. I took off work early that day, and for company I brought along some 19 year old part-timer named Becky. We joked the whole way there about how stupid this was - we were grown women for chrissakes, and here we were like a couple of pre-teens going to stand in line to get his autograph on a book I would rather look at the pictures in than read.
We got to the mall 2 hours early to find the line already queueing up. I kid you not when I tell you they were almost all middle aged, overweight women and half of them were wearing bedroom slippers. Seriously. The very first person in line was a little old lady of 73, who happened to be the head of the Fabio fan club. She was wheelchair bound, and had gotten the priviledge of meeting Fabio one day when she was on the Joan Rivers show with a bunch of other people who ran fan clubs. He actually took her out after the show, and he still calls her every now and then. Apparently, Fabio was raised by his grandmother, who passed away from lung cancer, so he raises money big time for cancer research. Hmm. Who knew he was a nice guy?
Nice does not even begin to describe this man. Oh, holy God and all the angels in his orchestra...Fabio walked in and all of the saliva left my mouth. You know how celebrities don't usually look as good in person? I was totally prepared for that - in fact, I was sure it was going to happen. He has a largish nose, and probably huge crows feet from all the suntanning. I was ready to be let down. What I wasn't ready for was the fact that he looks a bazillion times better in person. I mean bow-chicka-bowm-bowm amazingly good. He sits down, someone whispers in his ear, and then his head snaps around and he spots the old lady. He gets up, strides right over, picks her up out of her wheelchair, swings her around, then sets her down next to him at the signing table and gives her hand a squeeze. I think that's about when my underwear got drenched.
The line moved slowly forward, as woman screeched and flashed their cameras an inch from his eyes. His smile never wavered. What a good sport this guy was - these women were totally ob-fucking-noxious. I was so embarrassed for him. Did he put up with this all the time? Women making utter assholes of themselves? I decided then and there I was going to be the one he remembered as being normal. After all, I was 25 years old, due to be married soon, and I wasn't wearing bedroom slippers. No, I had on my black leather high boots with the come-fuck-me heels, and my blonde hair was sprayed and standing at attention. I was together. I was the shit.
Or, more accurately, I went to shit. We were told to write our names on a scrap of paper and hand them to him, since English isn't his first language he had a hard time with spelling on some of the names. I got up there, handed him my scrap, and he read it.
"Den-ise." He said. Then he looked up. "Well, hello Den-ise." He smiled. He smiled and our eyes met and the world stopped and all of time stood still as a thousand miniature angels danced in a shaft of light that encircled his head. I fell into the fathomless depths of his crystal blue gaze and I drew in a shaky breath and said:
"I love your book! I love your book and I read it and it was great and I really, really loved it when I read it!!"
His smile faltered slightly, then he gave a nod and signed my book. I could see the love, the longing, in every stroke of his sharpie pen. He handed the book to me and said "Thank you."
"Oh, thank you! 'Cause your book is SO great! I really, really loved it and I read it and I couldn't stop reading it because it was so, so great and I loved it!!"
He must've been inflamed with lust, for his arm reached out to me and he said:
"Would you like a picture?" "Yes! Yes, I would like a picture. I'd like a picture very much! And I loved your book!!" "Yes." He was looking wary now. "Would you like a picture with me?"
I finally realized that I was holding up the line, and Becky the part-timer was holding my camera and screeching like a banshee saying "Take a picture!! Take a picture!!"
I leaned in. His manly, bulging arm encircled my waist. I trembled, everything blurred, and I realized I'd stopped breathing. There was a blinding flash, and then someone pressed my book into my hand and ushered us along. I looked back, to see if his eyes were following me, moist with the tears he dared not show - the two of us trapped in our respective lives, star-crossed lovers who were destined for another lifetime.
He didn't look up. Well, it was probably better that way. Sooner or later I would have felt trapped by his high-living lifestyle. Lavish vacations and sun-drenched villas with free-flowing wine and thick-crusty bread sort of pale in comparison to sitting here with a half a pop-tart in my hand, blogging for you good folks. I guess we just weren't meant to be.
Mostly 'cause I was, y'know...an asstard.

Finally, what about Naomi? According to the NY Times, PBS and Sesame Workshop are reviving The Electric Company - it's currently filming here in NY, and will start airing in January 09. Quoth Linda Simensky, senior director of programming for PBS Kids: “It’s the old one mixed with ‘High School Musical’ and a Dr Pepper commercial.”
If this is remotely true, that sound you hear from Central NJ might be me SQUEEing.
Mind you, I am aware it won't be...THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, but it'll be the Electric Company. And that might be enough.

Sammy has swim classes coming up in June, so she and I were looking at bathing suits while we were at Target. That was weird. I knew I wanted her to have a two-piece of some sort, just in case she has to go to the bathroom. Pulling up a wet one-piece is difficult in the first place. Having to do it by yourself in a two minute bathroom break would be sucky.
Sam's going through a growth spurt (and it's making her grumpy, as she's growing out of some of her favorite things), so I couldn't just grab a medium and go. We picked out five suits and went to try 'em on. The bottoms on the mediums were a little too tight, but the tops fit, mostly. The bottoms on the larges were too big, but would probably fit by the time her classes start. The tops won't fit till puberty hits. And even if she does start to devlop boobs as early as I did (ohpleasedon'tdothattoher), she's still got a year to go.
That was unsatisfactory. So, we went over to the boys section and found her a really nice swim shirt, with the added bonus of it covering more, so she won't have to remember to put so much sunscreen on. We looked for trunks next. She found some with Cars and I found some with Spiderman, but hers didn't come in the right size and she didn't like the design on mine. We looked at some plain ones, but they were too plain. Then she found some Hawaiian inspired prints that were colorful and had hyacinths on them. She was enthusiastic about these, so *yay*.
Unfortunately, she picked them up and I didn't look at the size and we ended up with a small when she's a medium. *But* there's a Target *very* near darthgeek's office, so he's got the trunks in his laptop bag and the reciept in his wallet, so he'll do an exchange on Wednesday. Yay. :)

This is so very cool. From Cory Doctrow's mailing list:
Last week,I told you about my donations program for my new book, Little Brother. Every time I put a book online for free, I'm inundated by offers of cash "tips" from people who got the ebooks for free. I don't want anyone's money (cutting my publisher out of the loop isn't good for them or me), so I came up with an alternative. I asked librarians and teachers who wanted free copies to step forward and put their names down, and now I'm looking for would-be "donors" to step forward and send them copies of the book.
The project's been a smashing success so far: dozens of librarians, teachers and related trades put their names down for free copies, and we've started to fulfil the orders at a good clip. There's plenty of open orders left, though -- if you're one of those people who wants to compensate me for the free ebook, here's your chance!

Thoughts on The Academy Is...
|
May. 13th, 2008 @ 01:02 pm
|

|
I just got the first full length Academy cd, Almost Here. I know, I know, I should have had it before now, but I'm lazy! Getting music requires effort! Anyhow, finally got the album and listened to it on the way to work this morning. Hot damn. My love for that band has just grown exponentially, I am so in love with that cd. Its so much more of what I expected them to be than Santi is. And I really like Santi, Neighbors is one of my favorite songs right now. But Almost Here feels a lot more raw, in a good way. More punk rock, more honest, more out there than Santi does. As much as I like Same Blood, Attention is a far better album opener and really catchy. Slow Down has some of the most clever turns of phrase I've heard in a while, and I search out music built around clever lyrics. And for Almost Here, the lyrics tend to make more sense than Santi. I like Everything We Had, but honestly William Beckett- what does "the light from the lamp on the floor" even mean? I get the "only as bright as you wanted me to be" part, thats not hard. But why are you a lamp on the floor? Why was the lamp on the floor in the first place? Etc, etc. Onto other songs, The Phrase that Pays is sad and hopeful at the same time, and it was cool finally hearing 'hold your head high heavy heart' aloud. The song Almost Here closed the album out well, and left me wishing there were more tracks on it. In fact, I went back and started over as soon as the song ended. But my favorite favorite is Checkmarks. I'd heard it on the Warped Tour compilation and its what convinced me to look into the band. But oh, that song. Its just so angry and bitter and I fuckin love it. Its one of my goals to cover that song one day. Because yeah, it was written by a guy, but a girl could put a damn interesting twist on the song. Especially the line "the bittersweet taste of other boys on your lips"- face it, no matter who the girl would be singing about, thats a fucked up statement. And it would be AWESOME.
Anyhow, I've had Checkmarks stuck in my head for the past couple of hours, so here, have some lyrics:
Did you miss looking up from the floor at my face on the stage in a crowded room? Well its not the same. I bet you're still a sucker for those famous faces. Downtown, looking down, down, looking out at the crowd I hope you're out there- look at me now Well its not the same Just look at how we've changedWhere the **** am I?: work What am I listening to?: The Academy Is...-Almost Here

+ Last weekend was Alex's birthday party so we drove out to South Coatesville to Shannon's place. Google maps told us to take back roads and the drive was wonderful and scenic. Not a bad drive at all. We had a nice time and J actually allowed my father to play with Ethan. The two of them had a good time. On the drive back we got stuck in traffic on Rt 1 and as I was gazing out my window I realized who was sitting in the car next to me. That loser Brent I dated and lived with in '98. And folks time has not done him well. He's a pretty sad sight. But he's a pretty sad character. So M and I had our chuckle and finally traffic let up and we whizzed by as he had to sit behind another car I'm amazed his clunker didn't just fall apart right there on the road. You'd of thought so with his sad eyed put upon face but alas no such luck was to be had!
+ That Sunday we met up with Mona, Kris, Lori, Brandon, the new baby and the kids at Longwood Gardens for the Wine & Jazz Festival. It was a beautiful day and we all had a lot of fun. I picked up a few bottles of wine from this one hippy winery called Long Trout who sold this yummy Blueberry Merlot, a chocolate raspberry wine and a Pinot Noir. Yummy :) I also picked up a small box of Eclat chocolates as they were out of the larger boxes. we took quite a few pictures of the family and later the kids went on this big hill with about 50 other kids and we took some video. The downside of our day were there were a few openly racist individuals who remarked on Lori's mixed marriage and even one woman came over to us and implied to Lori that she was a bad mother for allowing her children on the hill. She was clearly singled out since there were many parents standing around. It's really sad that there are people like this still living and breathing she walked off just fast enough that we were just shocked and didn't know what to say and believe me had she stuck around she would've gotten more than ear full.
Anyway here's some pictures etc that were taken:
Watch Ethan dance at the top of the hill hahaha
( Pictures under here )
+ Last week was a blur of running around and doctors etc. I received a few emails from Jay. In one he asked if I still spoke with L. I told him no and he replied that that was good that she always reminded him of Lassie hahahaha. He was never fond of her nor Ryan. He was always polite though with them and accommodating to them. I've yet to call him back. But he seems to be doing much better.
+ Saturday although I was still feeling like hell I decided to go ahead with driving into the city to do some shopping. I hit up Buffalo Exchange for some rad recycled fashion and procured a pair of Joe's jeans from the vintage series, an awesome retro skirt, and a silk retro print tank buy Nannette Lepore, and a cute long sleeve top buy RicRac (an anthropologie brand). M picked up two pairs of jeans that he seems satisfied with another Lucky pair and a Diesel pair. The kids were actually on very good behavior. Afterward we walked down to LUSH and I bought bath bombs - All That Jas, Butterball, Sakura, and Youki-Hi. Ethan wanted one too and he picked up Blackberry because it was wonderful. I've promised to pick him up a shower jelly next time. I also picked up a Bathos and Flosty gritter bubble bars, Alkmaar soap, Rehab Shampoo, American Cream conditioner, Goth Juice Gel (free with purchase), Enchanted Eye Cream and samples - Cynthia Sylvia Stout, King of Mods, Almond and Coconut Smoothie, Smitten Hand cream, Happy soap. I promised Alyssa that I'd buy her a gift set for her birthday. Both kids loved the place lol. afterward we headed over to L'Occitane to pick up some cherry Blossom lip gloss and hand cream. Ethan demanded he test a few perfumes and waved around his tester stick saying it smelled sooo romantic - hahahaha. Christie called and we met up with James and her for lunch at Sabrina's (the second one). Later we headed home as I was feeling especially ill after eating. Later Karen came by and the kids ran and played outside for a good long while. That night I watched Darjeeling Limited finally.
+ Sunday we picked up Miriam and headed to the Drafting Room in Exton for Mother's day brunch with my family. Luckily we were all at a table together with my grandparents. I ordered a burger hoping it would help with the nausea and it did a little. I only had a few bites though. But it was fun sitting and talking. Afterward we went over to Home depot so I could buy a few more plants and planters than home to relax.
+ I'm trying to get things done this week. It looks like M's going to have to do the majority of the shopping for the BBQ. I still need gift wrap and I need to make a few salads etc but that'll happen on Friday. Oh yes I need to reply to email etc.
+ My grandfather is coming down and he's going to design some garden beds and flower beds for me and give me advice on some shrubs and fencing as this chain link crap has to go I find it an awful eyesore.
+ There's more but I have things to do around the house now...and I need a shower.
 Feeling: blah

In my opinion.
First off- women are becoming stereo typical men. Hear me out. The butt kicking thing is cool. The “OMG EMOTIONS!! NO!!!” Freak out is not cool. Why is it that when you have a physically strong female character she has to be totally afraid of her own emotions? It's like sex is fine, except when emotions are involved. Or there is no sex because the woman is so paralyzed by herself, and so locked into being macho that she can't be open and express how she feels. But this usually leads to #2 below. Before I get to that though, this strength of body, weak in emotions, thing seems to be a harkening to the ‘men’ of old. These male characters were great testimonies to physical strength, but weren’t allowed to discuss their emotions. So came a shift, in writing and society, wherein men were supposed to talk about their emotions, but didn’t seem comfortable with them. This is what happens with the rules change. Now authors are putting female characters into this position, with the same uncomfortable result.
Secondly- domination. Sure, there are some women out there who like to be dominated, told what to do, etc. I'm not like that, it makes me cranky. So for once I would really like to see an equal relationship. I'm getting so sick of these female characters that can only go for men that can kick their asses. As if the authors are telling us “women really need/want to be dominated, even if they don’t know it,” and that we can't be happy in a relationship with our equal.
If a woman has power- the man has more. Simple, basic rule that’s infecting Urban Fantasy (among other areas).
( Rant Cut for Kindness )
What this boils down to, for me, is the message that comes across.
Women will never be the equal to a man.
Women may be strong, but men are always stronger.
Women do not want an equal partner, they want/need a more powerful man.
Women want/need a man to force them to enjoy sex, if only because she can’t admit she wants him- for whatever reason, and he knows that she really does (or knows he can make her enjoy it).
I don’t like the message, and I refuse to accept the ‘truth’ of it.
Note- I am not blaming men, or trying to make a man vs. woman thing.Feeling: annoyed

So much to say, I don't even know where to start. Lets see. I got an invitation to contribute to a concert review website. Now, as cinaea pointed out, the website is pretty much the Flickr for concert reviews, in that anyone can contribute. But! This definitely has inspired me to take the reviews more seriously, write them more professionally, and try to take more photographs at the concerts I go to. Plus, the guy who started the site emailed me personally, so its hard not to feel a little flattered. :) Stemming from this, I have started a new blog strictly for concert reviews. I won't tell you the site yet, just because there is nothing on there. I'm going to clean up the reviews of the past couple of concerts I've been to and put those on there. Once that is done and I have a good looking layout, I'll start crossposting and pimping myself. Yar.
Loki is truly living up to his name. He is a sweet cat, but OH my god, does he have a lot of energy. Also, he is officially banned from the bedroom at night until he stops trying to pee on the bed. Seriously, not cool. Leaping out of bed to carry a squirming kitten to the litter box is not fun, and I don't want to continue doing it. Sigh. He also is quite unable to look before he leaps. I blew a fuse Sunday night (yeah, I have old style fuses, how random, right?) and lit some candles to wait for Palmer to come over. He is totally my knight in shining armor, by the way. Anyhow, I had some candles lit, and Loki had been staying away from them when all of a sudden he got the brilliant idea to go stand right over them. Leapt past me and just stood over one before I could grab him back. Well. Mr Burnt Whiskers has learned a lesson and currently has shorter hair on his belly than everywhere else on his body. He also smelled quite lovely, like burnt fur, for the rest of the evening. But hes a trooper, and after staring wide eyed at the candles from a safe distance, was back up in my lap purring shortly thereafter.
Sunday evening I went over to my parents house for a combination Mothers Day/my birthday dinner. We had strip steak and potatoes and some really nice red wine. I gave Mom her card, which made her tear up a bit. For her gift my sisters and i went in on a nice new coffeemaker. It looks quite sleek on their brand new marble counter. Good times. Also, I may get their old coffeemaker. I have one, but its a tiny little Mr Coffee. This is a ten-cup Krups. Mmm, quality. Then my Mom and Dad gave me their gift, which was a gift card to New York and Co! hooray! I heart that store a lot, and am looking forward to a mini shopping spree. Serena and Ed couldn't be there because Serena was working, but they left a gift for me- cropped workout pants and a nice foam green workout tank. w00t! LuluLemon is mad quality but also mad expensive, so its awesome to get some stuff from them. I may have to buy more myself, but oh- so pretty, so shiny. Awesome birthday dinner all in all.
Yesterday I was sick as shit. Headache, fever, sore throat, etc. Palmer proved once again his amazingness by going to the store and getting me Aleve, anti-histamines, Gatorade, Saltines, and a new fuse! Yeah, one of those things is not like the others, but I really needed a new fuse so he got one for me. And installed it! he's a hero, he really is. Loki of course was pleased as punch that I was home all day. Spent most of the day asleep on my chest, it was pretty cute. And I've learned that he is quite content to be tucked into a hoodie and chill there fore hours. Its pretty adorable.
Tonight I'll be celebrating my birthday at Dave and Busters with a group of people. Should be a good time. Drink some alcohol, shoot some zombies. Yay! Ooh, I totally need to do more of those upside down shots, or whatever they're called. Delicious! And thats about it for now. Ta!Where the **** am I?: work What am I listening to?: The Academy Is...-Slow Down
