[info]destabee pointed out a pair of articles today (she is not the idiot in the subject line, she's a smart woman)

One about bookshelf management and sort of a response to that.

One says that you should only put books on a shelf in a public place if you've read them and they really reflect you. The other says it's okay to have books out that reflect who you want to be. What I want to know is who the hell has time for this? Are they reading so little that they can sit around deciding what will and won’t be shown off? Are their choices so narrow that they think they be defined by a few books on a couple of shelves?

Both these assholes clearly think that they are their fucking khakis.

You know what? We have a few thousand DVDs and a few thousand books in our house. Bookshelves are not where you show off, bookshelves are where you put all the damn media! I'm having a hard enough time trying to just keep up and not have to stack half of [info]droewyn's books and my DVDs on the damn floor! Even with that, we've currently got stacks of books on the floor because [info]droewyn got stalled in her book cataloguing project and nothing has been cleared away.

I've got books EVERYWHERE!
On bookshelves,
on counters,
on tables and chairs
in baskets and drawers
but not on the stairs
they some times are stacked
and can attract stares
them sons of bitches
is everywheres!

Most the book readers I know have a similar problem. They’ve got just enough space on their shelves for the books they have without trying to show the world who they are with the books they keep in the living room. We’re too busy trying to find places to put all the damn books. They just sort of show up and need a place to sit, and it’s enough to get them on shelves without having to worry about whether they belong in public view or not.

We’ve actually had the following conversation more than once. Syd will show me a book with confusion on her face.

“Is this your book?”
“No, I’ve never seen that book before.”
“Well, I’ve never even heard of it before and it’s the kind of book you read.”
“Sorry, I know the books I buy and I didn’t buy that.”
“Where the hell did it come from then?”
“Who cares? It’s a book. Put it on a shelf somewhere.”

Yes, that’s really happened on more than one occasion. The books just multiply on their own sometimes. I’m having a hard enough time trying to keep them from taking over entire rooms with their rapid multiplication. MP3s do this too because I’ve listened to songs I never knew existed but were on my hard drive. Audio books on tape though, shouldn’t really be on shelves. They should be put into MP3 format and stored on your hard drive. Keep the tapes in a cool dry place where they won’t get damaged in case you need to remake a file or something. Just my own rule of thumb there. Even then, my hard drives are littered with books, radio shows, and other things that I haven’t listened to but intend to someday. Can’t be bothered to display what I’ve got there either.

Soo, yeah, I guess what I’m saying is that you have so few books that you can make pretentious choices about how to show them off to the world, go fuck yourself with a white wine sprizter and choke on your asiago bagel you yuppie scum shit bag. Better yet, go enter the grid. I want you in the game until you die playing.

End of line

ETA: That's right! It's a fucking Tron reference!

Have some video of the light bikes.

This is the most ridiculous quote in the whole thing: " The living room books ARE NOT the combined book collections of Matt Selman and his wife. (She may have read some of them, but who knows, really.) This is only the collection of Matt Selman."

WTF? I would certainly not wish to be married to this douche.

He has far, far too much time on his hands. Me, I'm lucky if I can manage to put all the books I've bought but not had time to read in the same place so that I know where to grab from when I want a fresh book and don't have to go hunting around the house.

I used to read a lot more often than I currently do, mostly because I used to have a lot more spare time than I currently do. Unfortunately, my book buying habits are still the same, so I buy as many books as I would have had time to read when I was, say, unemployed.
